Monash Art Design and Architecture Japan Study Tour

昨年に引き続き、インターナショナル・デザイン・リエゾンセンターにて、モナッシュ大学（オーストラリア・メルボルン）のデザイン・建築学科主催の集中プログラム「Tokyo is a planet」が2024年11月に開催されました。今回で２回目の開催となる本プログラムに参加した学生が取り組んだのは、この都市の音風景——単なる騒音ではなく、「鼓動」を掘り起こすことです。フィールドレコーダーとカメラを携えて、東京を聴覚で知覚する情報―信号とリズムと残響が織りなす動的で多声的なネットワーク―としてマッピングしようという試みです。

本スタディツアーは、初日に実施された展覧会「pooploop」（21_21 Design Sight）の訪問を皮切りに始まりました。同展の展示構成・デザインを手がけた大野祐資（ドミノアーキテクツ）によるガイドの後、大野氏の仕事紹介を兼ねてレクチャーを実施。

二日目は、デザイン人類学者であり多摩美術大学教授の中村寛氏によるフィールドワークの手法に関するレクチャーがありました。また、モナッシュ大学卒業生でデザイン史家・多摩美術大学統合デザイン非常勤講師の野見山桜氏からは、日本のデザイナーや美術作家によるサイトスペシフィックな調査への創造的アプローチの事例紹介がありました。

導入として機能した連続講座の後は、学生たちはグループに分かれ、亀有、南千住、巣鴨、中野、西荻窪、豪徳寺、品川、清澄白河という8つの地域に分かれて小グループでフィールドリサーチを実施。東京を観光地としてではなく、神社と街路、庭園とバー、店舗とその間の空間というように、音のテクスチャーが織りなすフィールドとして体験し、それらからサウンドスケープを構築するために、素材を収集しました。

スタジオワークでは、谷崎潤一郎の『陰翳礼讃』（1933年）を引用し、コラージュを用いて存在と虚無の相互作用を探求しました。谷崎のテキストに導かれ、彼らのアッサンブラージュは空間と不在の物質的研究へと変化していきました。また、東京藝術大学へ訪問し、長谷川香教授のレクチャーを聴講。学生たちは、東京の歴史的・都市的・建築的文脈への理解を深めました。

成果発表

2025年5月、東京ミッドタウンデザインハブで開催された「University Labs Exhibition」へ参加し、本プログラムで制作された学生プロジェクト「www.tokyo-is-a-planet.com」が展示されました。またモナッシュ大学オープンキャンパスでは、学生たちが放送局を設置し、コールフィールドキャンパスから東京探求の軌跡をライブ配信しました。

Monash Art Design and Architecture Japan Study Tour

In November 2024, a group of students from Monash University’s Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture embarked on an immersive study tour in Tokyo. Their mission was to excavate the city’s soundscape – not just its noise, but its pulse. Equipped with field recorders and cameras, they set out to map Tokyo’s auditory ecologies as dynamic, polyphonic networks of signals, rhythms, and residues.

Based at the International Liaison Center, the tour began with an introductory lecture by Yusuke Oono (Domino Architects), preceded by a guided visit to the exhibition pooploop at 21_21 Design Sight. On day two, students were introduced to fieldwork tactics by design anthropologist and TAMA professor Yutaka Nakamura, followed by a session on creative approaches to site specific research with design historian and Monash University alumna Sakura Nomiyama.

Working in small groups across eight neighbourhoods — Kameari, Minami-Senju, Sugamo, Nakano, Nishiogikubo, Gotokuji, Shinagawa, and Kiyosumi-Shirakawa —, the students experienced Tokyo not as a series of destinations but as a field of sonic textures – shrines and streets, gardens and bars, shops and the spaces in between.

In the studio, they used collage as a way to explore the interplay between presence and void, drawing on Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows (1933). Guided by excerpts from Tanizaki’s text, their assemblages became material studies of space and absence.

To support their research, students also attended a lecture by Professor Kaori Hasegawa at Tokyo University of the Arts, deepening their understanding of Tokyo’s historical, urban, and architectural contexts.

In May 2025, the project culminated in Monash’s participation in the University Labs Exhibition at the Tokyo Midtown Design Hub, where the student project www.tokyo-is-a-planet.com was exhibited.

For Monash University Open Day 2025, the students set up a broadcast station to transmit live from Caulfield Campus – sharing traces of their exploration of Tokyo.
