Second World Industrial Design Day Design Dialogue held
Members of the World Design Organization (WDO) in Japan are Tama Art University, Chiba University, Musashino Art University, theJapan Industrial Design Association (JIDA), and the Japan Institute of DesignPromotion. On June 29 of each year, WDO members around the world hold various events on a shared global theme, to mark World Industrial Design Day (WIDD),the anniversary of the WDO's founding. This year's shared theme is "Let’stalk DIVERSITY." In Japan, this theme has been interpreted as"Designing another future." Through a dialogue among students from three WDO member universities in Japan and professional designer, we considered together what design can do to realize "another future,"as continuation on the current trajectory would inevitably lead to dramatic changes in the global environment, including threats to biodiversity.

Theme of the talk: Designing another future
(Each student presents a preliminary report based on the message below from Mr. Tachikawa.)
100 years ago. We are still receiving design education based on the Bauhaus, which was born the year after the Spanish flu of 1918 killed tens of millions of people. Modernism democratized culture and the arts, and products have been distributed to all corners of the world. And now. This is the year after 2020, the year of Corona virus outbreak. If your generation's design changed the 22nd century, what would it be like, and what would happen in the future?
The students expressed the following opinions about the change in values based on the drastic changes in their daily lives after the Corona.
-To actively choose between online and offline life.
-To a world in which it is more important to pay attention to others as we have more time to face ourselves.
-In a world where digital technology has become the norm, analog experiences will enrich people's lives.
-The role of design is to deliver things to people who really need them.
-Toward a world where anyone can design and create things
It was a precious opportunity to hear Mr. Tachikawa's heartful words of encouragement and advice to the students who will carry the future of design. For details of the dialogue, please see the minutes below.
As an international platform for design organizations, WDO will continue to provide opportunities for its members to interact with each other through such opportunities.
