Launch of the Good Design Award in Colombia: First Awardees Announced

ABOUT

The Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) has supported the establishment of a national Good Design Award in Colombia through a three-year project commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Since fiscal year 2022, JDP has collaborated with local partners to help launch the award, and in May 2025, the very first recipients of the “Buen Diseño Colombia” were officially announced.

Building on over 60 years of experience operating the Good Design Award in Japan—a program that has driven industrial and social innovation—this project aimed to promote design and stimulate industrial development in Colombia. Working closely with Colombian government agencies, universities, and entrepreneurship organizations, JDP provided technical support and guidance throughout the award’s planning and implementation, from establishing the award framework and evaluation criteria to facilitating the screening process.

The inaugural Buen Diseño Colombia, held in May 2025, received 283 submissions from across all 32 regions of the country as well as from abroad. Of these, 215 entries passed the initial screening, and 41 were selected as final nominees. Following rigorous evaluation, awardees were chosen for their outstanding design and contributions to sustainable value across various fields, including environmental innovation, social inclusion, regional revitalization, and research-driven technology.

The launch of this national design award in Colombia marks a significant step not only for the promotion of design and innovation in the country, but also as a new model for international collaboration. We will continue to follow the development of the Buen Diseño Colombia initiative and the growth of creative exchange between our two nations with great interest.
