TOKYO WOOD LIVING 2040: Designs for Forest, Trees and Tokyo — A GOOD DESIGN Marunouchi Exhibition Connecting the City and the Forest, Opening May 1

Exhibits Across Four Locations Including Yurakucho, Marunouchi, and Yaesu / Wood-themed Market at Marunouchi Building from May 16 to 18

The Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), with special sponsorship by Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd., will present the second edition of the GOOD DESIGN Marunouchi special exhibition “TOKYO WOOD LIVING 2040: 山と木と東京” from May 1 (Thu) to May 31 (Sat), 2025.* (*Dates may vary depending on the venue.)

Spanning the areas of Otemachi, Marunouchi, Yurakucho, and Yaesu, the exhibition explores how we can reimagine Tokyo as a city where people live in harmony with wood by the year 2040. Directed by Takekazu Inoue, Aya Utsumi, Mikio Koshihara, and Koichi Wakasugi, the initiative focuses on using design to foster a cyclical relationship between the mountains and the city, addressing the challenges facing Japan’s forests today. The program also connects with shops around Tokyo Station that carry wood-related products, offering opportunities to engage with diverse stakeholders.

About the Exhibition

Japan’s forests today face serious degradation. To restore their richness and pass on valuable resources to future generations, it is crucial to establish an economic and material cycle between the mountains and the city. This exhibition looks at the current state of forests, wood, and urban life, and presents design-based solutions that could help shape a “WOOD LIVING” Tokyo by 2040.

Using the GOOD DESIGN Marunouchi gallery and other venues in Marunouchi, Otemachi, and Yaesu, the program includes exhibitions, marketplaces, and symposiums. Each venue features a unique theme, showcasing ideas and technologies from architects, designers, artists, manufacturers, developers, builders, and forestry professionals working toward a creative and comfortable “city of wood.”
