The communities we take part in are filled with vexing challenges and mind-boggling problems, as typified by global environmental issues, and we apparently have no answers. We find ourselves almost ready to throw in the towel, yet historically, humankind has evinced unbelievable strength when faced with seemingly insurmountable problems. Somehow, somebody discovers a brilliant solution, and when the solution is shared by many, humanity overcomes the challenge. This kind of result may not necessarily follow objective methodology. Yet the solution convinces everyone. I believe that the advances of modern society have hollowed out these intrinsic circuits for sharing among people, and have aggravated the severity of our social agenda.

Couldn't the summoning power of design be leveraged, therefore, to restore these intrinsic circuits for sharing? The innate power belonging to design could elevate design into a medium for sharing and solving issues across society, and take design beyond the answers provided in response to each discrete design project. As a medium, design could fulfill a social role that transcends problem solving on an individual basis.

In this context therefore, the role of an institution dedicated to promoting design remains steadfast to the status-upgrade of design into a medium, and the resulting restoration of intrinsic circuits for sharing among people.

First, we delicately draw attention to the issues requiring solutions. We encourage self-directed design activities across society. We then lead the countless designs created to a forum of mutual inspection, and create launch pads for resolving the social issues and "insurmountable" challenges. The resulting reconnections of intrinsic circuitry and improvement in individual design competency reflect the measures that, in fact, bring greater affluence to our lives, and most beneficially and intelligently resolve our outstanding social issues.
