On May 30, the "World Interiors Day 2025" Design Symposium was held in conjunction with World Interiors Day, an annual celebration initiated by the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), of which the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) and the Japan Interior Designers’ Association (JID) are both members.

The event began with opening remarks from Ms. Akiko Ide, a board member of JID, who introduced the background and objectives of World Interiors Week and World Interiors Day. This was followed by a presentation from Mr. Jason B. Horton, IFI Executive Board Member, who shared insights into IFI’s initiatives and the significance of the IFI Prize.

The theme of this year’s symposium was:
“The Next Society Shaped Through Collaboration with AI in Design Expression.”

Three guest speakers shared their visions and critical perspectives on how AI is transforming design and society:

• Mr. Kakuo Matsumura, Architect and President of KAKUO Architects Office, presented a talk titled “Architecture × Generative AI × Next-Dimensional Fusion of Old and New.” He showcased how architectural expression can evolve with AI as a creative tool.

• Ms. Khaoula Benchekroun, Project Architect at CBRE Japan, gave a presentation entitled “AI: The Designer’s New Right Hand,” sharing practical experiences on how AI technologies can enhance design efficiency and stimulate creativity.

• Mr. lkki Kishida, Architect and Principal of awa design studio, delivered a thought-provoking talk titled “Generative AI: Sketching Happiness and Unhappiness.” He raised philosophical and ethical questions around AI’s role in urban planning and social visioning.

The symposium drew a large in-person audience and sparked vibrant discussions about the evolving role of design in a rapidly changing AI-driven world. It offered a timely and multifaceted platform to reimagine the future of design in society.
