Alternative Designation - Tokyo Midtown Design Hub 112th Exhibition
31 January – 23 February, 2025
Tokyo Midtown Design Hub will host a special exhibition titled "Alternative Designation," organized and managed by the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA). The exhibition is scheduled to take place from Friday, January 31, 2025, to Sunday, February 23, 2025.
With approximately 3,000 members, JAGDA is one of the largest design organizations in Asia. The association's Digital Media Committee has been exploring the unique characteristics and challenges of graphic design in expanded media through a series of experiments and reflective studies.
Graphic design has developed alongside the support of visual expression, such as paper or walls. Nowadays, on-screen expression such as on digital signage or smartphones has become common, and the technologies such as VR and AR also made it possible to develop in virtual environments. How can graphic design approach visual experiences in spaces that go beyond physical constraints, which will likely become common in the near future? JAGDA has considered the characteristics and challenges of graphic design in virtual spaces and the like, through several experiments and speculations. This exhibition will explore the possibilities of graphic design from various angles in the “other display” that emerges from visual experiences, regardless of whether they are real or virtual.
