The 2nd Good Design Indonesia selection was held in Jakarta
In 2017, Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) signed a memorandum of understanding on design promotion with the Ministry of Trade of Indonesia and has been cooperating in the judging and operation of the "Good Design Indonesia" design awards organized by the Ministry.
The 8th annual review meeting this year was held over three days from July 9th to 11th at the Ministry of Trade in Jakarta. From Japan, Mr. Takashi Shigeno, a product designer and a jury member for the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024, participated as a judge. From Indonesia, five experts representing Indonesian design, including product designers, graphic designers, and industrial designers, also participated as judges.
This year, there were 344 entries, and a dialogue-based review was conducted for applicants who passed the first screening. 34 entries received the award, and 10 of them were selected for the Best award. Among the Best awards, the highest-rated was a new material called M-Tex, which has a leather-like texture and is made from waste produced in the coffee bean manufacturing process. This highly versatile material, made from materials that would otherwise be discarded, was well-received by the judges in Indonesia, where waste management is a serious issue. It was praised not only for its contribution to solving environmental problems but also for the refined appearance of the material itself, which is used in products such as bags, chairs, and lampshades.
The works that receive the Good Design Indonesia award are eligible to skip the first screening of the Good Design Award in Japan and participate from the second screening. The recipients of the Good Design Award will be announced on October 16th, just like the regular Good Design Award winners, and will be exhibited at the "GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2024," which will be held over five days starting from November 1st.
