Third World Industrial Design Day Design Dialogue held
Members of the World Design Organization (WDO) in Japan are Tama Art University, Chiba University, Musashino Art University, the Japan Industrial Design Association (JIDA), and the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. On June 29 of each year, WDO members around the world hold various events on a shared global theme, to mark World Industrial Design Day (WIDD), the anniversary of the WDO's founding. This year's shared theme is "Let’s talk leadership." In Japan, this theme has been interpreted as "What kind of leadership should designers take?" We held an online event to discuss this theme with students from the three WDO member universities in Japan through dialogue with professional designers.
[World Industrial Design Day 2022 Design Dialogue Vol.3]
Time & Date: 20:00 - 21:45, June 29, 2022 (by Zoom Meeting)
Attendees:
Tadayuki Yakushi [General Manager, Design Group, Technology Planning Office, Global Product Planning Dept., R&D Center, TOYOTA Material Handling Company ]

Chiba University: Masashi Yamanaka, Marie Maruyama, You Kato
Musashino Art University: Kenou Kanai, Sakura Togami, Chihiro Shimada
Moderator: Akiko Watanabe (Senior manager, Japan Instiute of Design Promotion)
Theme of the talk: Let's talk about "products" of the future.
(Each student presents a preliminary report based on the message below from Mr. Yakushi.)
It has been a long time since it was said that "experience" is more important than "product," but in many cases, the experience cannot be realized without products. Japan's exports are dominated by industrial goods, with manufacturing accounting for approximately 20% of GDP. In other words, manufacturing continues to support Japan and the world. The job of industrial designers is expanding these days, but what kind of leadership will industrial designers take in Monodzukuri Japan? How can we regain our position as a manufacturing powerhouse? Or not? In a world overflowing with things, can we still make things? Let's think together.
The following key words were mentioned by the students.
-Leadership for industrial designers in dealing with social issues
-How to motivate people to create and leverage their strengths
-Leadership for diversification
-Shaping the lifestyles of the future
-Design and leadership from the perspective of the manufacturing system
It was a valuable opportunity for us to think together with Mr. Yakushi, a professional designer, about the future of "monodzukuri" in Japan, and the leadership that designers should take in the current situation where new lifestyles are required of the COVID-19 pandemic and at the same time we are facing global-scale issues. For details of the dialogue, please see the minutes below.
As an international platform for design organizations, WDO will continue to provide opportunities for its members to interact with each other through such opportunities.
